Outrageous, silly, funny or witty, an edgy advertisement to its highest humor, a woman is shown bowing her head and holding a hand over her face in shame in a poster displayed on a subway. “You’re Not Alone. Millions of people love the Big Mac,” the poster says next to her photo.

With the connotation of anyone who is “suffering” from problems like the woman in the photo can call the toll-free phone number also shown in the poster so that they can call for help but the number (800-244-6227) connects you to a McDonald’s corporate line.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s said that the ad was not approved of by McDonald’s. From the statement of Bradley Associates credited to McDonald’s spokesperson Nicole DiNoia:

“A local print ad displayed on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) was recently brought to our attention. We can confirm this ad was not approved by McDonald’s. And, as soon as we learned about it, we asked that it be taken down immediately. We have an approval process in place, with our marketing and advertising agencies, to ensure that all advertising content is consistent with our brand values. Regrettably, in this incident, that process was not followed. We sincerely apologize for this error.”
The ad has shown up on the Orange line of Boston’s T subway system, Boston Magazine noted. As one would have thought, some people say the ad is in bad taste particularly David Yamada, who hosts a blog for the New Workplace Institute at Suffolk University Law School in Boston. The poster looks like an ad a crisis center only with different words. Yamada after seeing the poster wrote that McDonald’s has hit “a new low” by “making fun of public service ads for people who may need mental health counseling”:

It seems that the ad writers and executives in McDonald’s high-priced marketing operation failed on this one, not funny at all.

On the contrary, there is a bit of a funny thought against this one the ad basically admits that there is something wrong and shameful discomforting, embarrassed, or painful about loving McDonald’s marquee attraction, the Big Mac. The ad is clearly proposed to be provoking, following the stereotype of that it’s better to offend than be ignored.

The target market for the message is obviously younger patrons, who apparently live and breathe irony everyday. Fascinatingly, McDonald’s appears frantic to get in touch with this demographic, which together isn’t really “loving it” at the Golden Arches lately.

AdAge recently emphasized research demonstrating that even supposing McDonald’s is the world’s leading fast food chain, the product is not in the top 10 favorite restaurants for consumers’ ages 18 to 35, approximately.

That’s a real crisis for McDonald’s. but the state they were doing at the moment may only worsen the dilemma they are currently facing.

Abe, born 21 September, 1954 is a Japanese politician and was the President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the chairman of the Oyagaku propulsion parliamentary group. He served the country as Prime Minister, December 26, 2006. He was elected by a special session on the National Diet and was the 90th Prime Minister.

Abe was the youngest post–World War II prime minister and the first born after the war.

He lasted as Prime minister for only less than a year resigning on September 12, 2007. And on 26 September last year, Abe defeated former Minister of Defense Shigeru Ishiba in a run-off vote to win the LDP presidential election. And on December 26, same year, Abe became Prime Minister again following the LDP’s landslide victory in the 2012 general election with a government.
Abe is said to have decided to scrap Japan’s spending cap for the fiscal 2013 budget. The previous controlling party, the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), established an annual spending limit of 71 trillion yen (approx. $901 billion) in order to try maintaining fiscal discipline.

What is this “Fiscal cliff”? It is the popular shorthand term used to describe the conundrum that the U.S. government said to face at the end of 2012, when the terms of the Budget Control Act of 2011 are scheduled to go into effect.

Abe’s government will review the country’s medium-term fiscal framework as Japan continues to face its snowballing public debt. This debt is left by previous Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda his top priority in raising taxes.

Who is Yoshihiko Noda? Noda was born on May 20, 1957; he was the previous Prime Minister of Japan prior to Abe. He was a member of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), and a member of the House of Representatives (lower house) in the Diet (national legislature). He was named to succeed Naoto Kan as a result of a runoff vote against Banri Kaieda in his party, and was formally appointed by the Emperor on 2 September 2011. Following a severe loss for the DPJ in the December 2012 general election, Noda conceded defeat and announced his resignation as party leader, intending to resign as prime minister upon the formation of former Prime Minister-designate Shinz? Abe’s new government.

Abe made many promises last year to Tokyo Japan and all over the country. This year, can he live up to his promises? One of the LDP’s target election pledges was to revive Japan’s stagnating economy, mainly by pressuring the Bank of Japan into easing its monetary policy. As for its own tax reforms, the LDP begun discussions for its 2013 policy later this week, with a goal of finishing by the end of January.
The tax bill pushed through by Prime Minister Noda included a doubling of Japan’s 5% consumption tax. The LDP’s 2013 reforms are expected to include measure that will reduce the impact of that increase on those with low incomes, as well as increase income taxes on those with high earnings. Other top stories possibilities include raising the inheritance tax, and giving tax breaks to homebuyers.

The army soldier named Bradley Manning accused of giving bombshell classified documents to WikiLeaks which has officially admitted by him. Bradley blames himself on the courtroom according to some witnesses. Currently, associates are under investigation for their participation in the largest public breach of classified data in history.

In a hearing in a Fort Meade, Maryland courtroom Thursday, Bradley pleaded guilty to ten of the 22 charges he faces in his court martial over allegations that he violated his secret clearance in giving information to WikiLeaks that regarded military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan–including the Apache helicopter video WikiLeaks titled “Collateral Murder”–as well as documents regarding the Guantanamo Bay prison. Those charges carry a maximum twenty year sentence. But Bradley denied some of the most serious charges against him, including “aiding the enemy,” a charge theoretically punishable by death, though prosecutors had previously stated that they would seek only life imprisonment for the 25 year old.
For Julian Assange and others involved in WikiLeaks’ megaleaks, the most significant portion of Bradley’s more than hour-long statement to the court may have been another element of his mea culpa: Placing the full blame on himself rather than arguing that he was pressured by WikiLeaks or others to obtain or exfiltrate any data.

The “decisions to send were my own,” Bradley told the court, according to a live blog of the hearing by Nathan Fuller, an advocate for Manning at the Bradley Manning Support Network, “and I take full responsibility.”

According to Fuller’s account, Bradley says he made contact with WikiLeaks only after reaching out to both the Washington Post and the New York Times. The Post‘s editor responded with disinterest, he said, and the Times‘public editor, for whom he had left a voicemail, never called him back. Only later did he turn to WikiLeaks as an outlet.

Bradley says he then began chatting with a member of WikiLeaks’ organization over an anonymous channel, communicating with someone he nicknamed “Nathaniel,” who he believed to be WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange or WikiLeaks spokesperson Daniel Domscheit-Berg. According to Fuller’s report, Bradley claimed in his statement that in those discussions Nathaniel never asked him to dig up more information, and that the leaks were proposed by Bradley himself. “No one from the [WikiLeaks organization] pressured me,” Fuller quotes Bradley telling the court.

Those revelations may have important repercussions in any expected indictment of Julian Assange or others associated with WikiLeaks. After all, Assange may be most vulnerable to accusations not of publishing classified materials, but of actively conspiring with Bradley and Associates to obtain it.

Can ‘risk-rated’ funds really deliver on their promises, or are they just another investment fad?

Before the credit crisis, investors sought out sky-high gains; now they want smooth returns and wealth preservation. Not surprisingly, a new type of fund has emerged to satisfy this demand. “Risk-rated” funds purport to offer an easy way for investors to manage equity risk, with a fund that is matched to their own investment aims.

Bradley Associates claim that these funds are an effective “one-stop shop”, meaning that investors don’t need to diversify further. And, as they can be adjusted to suit different risk profiles, they are sold to those who have a more cautious outlook as well as investors with a more gung-ho approach to their finances.

So how do these funds work? Basically, they are a suite of multi-manager funds, with each fund rated according to the risk it takes. Those at the lower end of the scale should be less volatile, while those further up the risk ladder take bigger punts with your money, potentially boosting returns.

<!--
google_ad_client = "ca-pub-9907434908074050";

Investors are first asked to complete a questionnaire to determine their attitude to risk, then, depending on the result, buy the appropriate fund in the range. They have certainly proved popular. Standard Life’s MyFolio range of such funds now has £2bn under management. Its 15 risk-rated funds claim to offer a single-product investment solution to every investor out there.

“The origins of these products are in the US market, where risk-rated and life-cycle funds have accounted for most of the growth in the US fund-of-funds market over the past decade,” said Jason Hollands of BestInvest, the advisory firm. Life-cycle funds work on a similar principle, with assets automatically moving into lower-risk funds as investors near a set target date – usually their retirement.

Such is the appetite for this style of quantifiable investing that many fund management groups are now rebranding their existing multi-manager funds to cash in on the trend. Jupiter had its flagship Merlin fund-of-funds range risk-rated in September. These funds will range from a risk level of “four” to “eight”. Henderson has announced plans to risk-rate its multi-manager offerings, and M & G has used the firm Distribution Technology to risk-rate three of its multi-asset funds.

But critics have argued that risk-rated funds are oversimplified. There are also concerns that the various fund managers and independent firms compiling risk ratings don’t always concur on how risky a fund actually is. The same fund can be given different ratings, depending on whose system is used. And there is a degree of subjectivity in how the so-called experts interpret investors’ questionnaires, while problems can arise because the questions aren’t always answered truthfully.
